Journal Submissions
Notes for Authors
Submitted papers may be short or long; between 2,000 – 8,000 words is the usual range. Papers must begin with a short stand-alone abstract of up to 250 words summarising their content and contribution in a form suitable for inclusion in the Society’s website. Please also identify up to six key words for your work.
Papers are to be submitted to the journal editors in electronic form preferably by email to d.j.williams2@lboro.ac.uk or keithad87@gmail.com. Manuscripts should be accompanied by separate figures, for instance illustrations and diagrams, of a standard suitable for reproduction. Manuscripts should be double spaced, identify where figures should be placed within the manuscript, and include a separate list of figure captions. Figures should be referred to in the body of the paper, numbered consecutively and their captions should include necessary permissions.
It is expected that the author will have secured rights to reproduction from any copyright holder before submission and that reproduction credits will be given appropriately.
The Journal house style is to use notes as a block at the end of the paper to present references and that notes include minimal additional expository material. Notes must be numbered consecutively in the text, with the number added after the punctuation mark, as: “These swords always broke when used.8”
Samples of notes to indicate the preferred style of referencing are below:
- See Claude Blair, European Armour, London, 1972, pp.53-76 and Pls 25, 29
- Brian C. Godwin, “Warner Pin: A Question of Attribution”, Journal of the Arms and Armour Society, Vol XVII, No, 2, 1981, pp. 122-138
- Guy M Wilson, “‘What’s in a name? One foot and two foot crossbows’, ICOMAM 50, Papers on Arms and Military History, Leeds, Pp. 300-325.
- Blair, op. cit, P.58.
- Ibid.
Appendices should be used to expand content, such as scientific detail, which will not be accessible to a broad readership but is necessary for completeness of the paper. Note that micrographs should include a scale bar or equivalent.
It is expected that authors will be prepared to revise their manuscripts to take account of the comments of reviewers and that there will be minimal changes to the manuscript during proof reading following its final submission to the printers.
Our aim is to publish papers as soon as possible after they have been submitted and reviewed. However, the editors reserve the right to hold some papers back and prioritise others depending on copy flow, the balance of each edition, and significant anniversaries, for example. The editors also reserve the right to make small revisions to the final manuscript to improve clarity.
While every care will be taken with submissions sent for consideration, all material is submitted at the owner’s own risk.
